History

The Astros have had a presence in the Dominican Republic since 1985 when the club operated out of the Estrellas Winter League Stadium in San Pedro de Macoris. From 1987-2009, the Astros home in the Dominican Republic was at Ingenio Santa Fe where numerous future Major Leaguers played. The Astros held the grand opening of the new Latin American Home of the Houston Astros in Guerra, Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic on May 10, 2010. Recent graduates of the Academy include right handed pitcher Jose Cisnero, who made his Major League debut for Houston in 2013.

In 2014, plans were announced to add a second club to the Astros Dominican Summer League to further the development of the organization's Latin American talent. Former pitcher, manager, and coach in the Astros farm system, Carlos Alfonso, was named international development coordinator and special assignment scout for the new club.
