Astros fill out rosters on day two
By Alyson Footer / MLB.com

HOUSTON -- The Astros spent the second and final day of the 2002 draft selecting players who will likely fill the club's rookie league rosters in Martinsville and Tri-City this summer.

Director of Scouting David Lakey explained that the majority of the lower-level draftees are "draft-and-follows," meaning that if a player gets drafted and then goes to a Junior College, the club that drafted him has sole negotiating rights up until one week before the following year's draft.

"We'll follow them and see how they come along and see if we want to sign them next spring," Lakey said.

The Astros selected Shawn Williams in the 35th round (1,061 overall) out of Clearwater (FL) Central Catholic High School. If that name sounds familiar, that's because he's the son of Astros manager Jimy Williams, who missed last Friday's game in Chicago to attend Shawn's high school graduation.

"Our guys saw him as an outfielder and a pitcher," Lakey said. "Jimy Williams has told me that he thinks his son's best position is at catcher. I've never seen him catch, but he's a fairly strong kid and he has the potential with the bat. He doesn't run very well. I can kind of envision him as a catcher."

The younger Williams has already signed with St. Petersburg Junior College, and Lakey is unsure whether he will forego that commitment and sign with the Astros.

"Our guys are going to try to set up a meeting with him in the next day or two," Lakey said. "Jimy won't be there, obviously, except maybe by the phone (The Astros are in the midst of a nine-game road trip)."

The club's 43rd round selection was Guayanabo, Puerto Rico first baseman Freddie Thon, son of Astros scout Frankie Thon and nephew of former Astros shortstop Dickie Thon. On Tuesday, Houston selected UNLV outfielder Jason Reuss, son of former Astros pitcher Jerry Reuss, in the 11th round.

"That was kind of a courtesy," Lakey said of drafting Thon. "He signed to go to Villanova. He's going to college -- he's a smart kid."
