The 2005 N.L. West Division champion Padres were predominantly built by general manager Kevin Towers (1995-present), who has run the team for a decade. The one holdover from the Randy Smith era (1993-1995) is Trevor Hoffman, who saved more than half of San Diego's wins this season. The closer is the lone Padre who has been on the team since its run to the World Series in 1998. Mark Sweeney was also on that team, but left for a spell before rejoining the team this season.
