Knuckle Ball set for July 31

Benefit for Niekro Foundation to be held at Minute Maid

04/24/09 11:15 PM ET

HOUSTON -- The inaugural Knuckle Ball was one of many events in and around Houston that was canceled last year due to Hurricane Ike, but as they say in Hollywood [and Houston], the show must go on.

"The Knuckle Ball ... A Pitch for Life" is back on, scheduled for July 31 at Minute Maid Park. Organized by the Joe Niekro Foundation, the event will raise money for aneurysm research and treatment.

After Joe Niekro's tragic death from a brain aneurysm in October 2006, his daughter, Natalie, established the foundation in an effort to honor her father's legacy while raising funds for a worthy cause. She felt it only fitting that the foundation's kickoff fundraiser be held in Houston, the city that gave the Niekro family their greatest memories.

Athletes from all over the country are planning to attend the Knuckle Ball, including local favorites Jeff Bagwell, Craig Biggio, Nolan Ryan, Larry Dierker and Jimmy Wynn. In total, approximately 75 former and current athletes will be there, including Hall of Famer Joe Morgan, who will emcee the event.

The black-tie affair will include an evening of casino gaming, a formal dinner, an auction and a private performance by Grammy Award Country Music artist Collin Raye.

The evening will honor Niekro, his baseball years and charitable work, with proceeds benefiting aneurysm research and treatment at The Methodist Hospital Neurological Institute in Houston.

Individual ticket prices begin at $536, and tables are available for various prices. For more information, visit joeniekrofoundation.com
