HOUSTON -- Astros pitcher Mike Hampton, who has been on the disabled list since Aug. 14 with a left shoulder strain, will have surgery on Tuesday to repair the rotator cuff in his left shoulder. In late August, Hampton, 37, told the Astros that he was done for the season and would have surgeries on both knees and his left shoulder in anticipation of a comeback next season.
Hampton's surgery will take place at the Hospital For Special Surgery in New York. Hampton's operation will be performed by Dr. David Altchek. Altchek has already done three surgeries on Hampton -- two elbow operations and one on a knee.
The long-term prospects for Hampton, who was 7-10 with a 5.30 ERA in 21 starts with Houston before going on the DL, will be evaluated after his surgery. Hampton's one-year, $2 million base contract with the Astros will expire at the end of the World Series, at which time he will be able to file for free agency.
