Astros not interested in Smoltz

Sources say Houston not among teams courting veteran

11/17/09 10:09 PM EST

HOUSTON -- Don't expect the Astros to pursue veteran pitcher John Smoltz.

Smoltz was said to have drawn interest of several teams according to a report by Foxsports.com, a list that included the Astros. And while the Astros have kicked around dozens of names from the list of free agents who have filed, sources indicate their interest in Smoltz just isn't there.

Smoltz is open to starting or relieving and could serve in the closer's role for a team in need of help at the back of the bullpen. Astros general manager Ed Wade said late on Tuesday that he wasn't going to comment on Smoltz.

Astros closer Jose Valverde and setup man LaTroy Hawkins are both free agents, and Houston would be forced to find a closer if both leave. It just doesn't appear it will be Smoltz, who went 2-5 with an 8.32 ERA for the Red Sox last year, before going 1-3 with a 4.26 ERA in seven starts for the Cardinals.

According to the report, the Cardinals, Dodgers, Mets and Mariners are among the teams that have expressed preliminary interest in the 42-year-old Smoltz.
