HOUSTON -- Astros rookie outfielder Brian Bogusevic underwent minor surgery on his right foot Wednesday, and veteran left-hander Tim Byrdak is scheduled to have surgery Thursday to repair a sports hernia.
Bogusevic, a former first-round Draft pick, appeared in 19 games in his Major League debut this year and hit .179 with three RBIs in 28 at-bats. He struck out 12 times. Bogusevic, who was drafted as a pitcher before making the switch to outfield in 2008, had been having issues with his right metatarsal.
Byrdak, who went 2-2 with a 3.49 ERA in 64 games, will undergo surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital in Worcester, Mass. The procedure will be performed by Dr. Brian Bosconi. Byrdak dealt all season with the hernia, which caused discomfort in his lower back and his hamstring.
Earlier this month, Astros reliever Jeff Fulchino has had arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow. The right-hander had inflamed tissue and a bone spur removed from his elbow.
