PITTSBURGH -- Alex Presley was placed on the seven-day concussion disabled list Thursday by the Pirates, who recalled shortstop Jordy Mercer from Indianapolis to take his roster place.

The decision to put Presley on the DL, injured on a diving-catch attempt in the first inning of Tuesday night's game against Houston, was reached after manager Clint Hurdle conferred with the left fielder in the early afternoon, and was based on additional evaluation of the tests he had undergone.

"We're all better served by doing this," Hurdle said. "It's a smart move to give him more time. It was the appropriate move after we got some feedback."

Presley jarred his upper-body attempting to snare a drive by the Astros' Jed Lowrie. He remained in the game until the start of the fifth inning, when Gorkys Hernandez replaced him on defense.

Mercer returns to the Pirates two weeks after his initial big-league stint ended when he was optioned to the Triple-A Indians. In the three weeks he had spent withe Bucs, Mercer made two starts at short but otherwise saw little action, getting a total of 11 plate appearances.
