Arlington, Texas- The Texas Rangers selected eight players on Day Two of the 2014 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Rounds three through 10 of the draft took place today. The rest of the draft, through round 40, will be completed on Saturday beginning at 12:00 p.m. CDT.
Below is additional information on the club's selections today through the 10th round. The club will send out a final list at the conclusion of the draft tomorrow.
In rounds 3-10, the Rangers selected eight players. The eight players include two right-handed pitchers, two left-handed pitchers, a catcher, a shortstop, a third baseman, and an outfielder. Texas selected seven college players and made one high school pick.
SS JOSH MORGAN (95th overall) - With the club's first pick of the day, Texas chose SS Josh Morgan out of Orange Lutheran High School in California…the 5-foot-11, 185-pounder was tabbed as the 6th-best shortstop prospect in the draft by Baseball America and was ranked 51st on Perfect Game USA's list of the top 500 high school prospects for 2014….Morgan posted a .300-or-better average in each of his last three seasons at Orange Lutheran, including a .303 mark as a senior…he added 18 runs scored, 7 doubles, and a home run during his senior campaign…earned numerous accolades during his high school career, including 2013 first-team Perfect Game Underclass All-American in 2013…participated in the USA Baseball 17U National Development Program in 2012…has committed to UCLA.
LHP BRETT MARTIN (126th overall) - The 19-year-old left-hander out of Walters State Community College in Morristown, Tennessee helped the Senators to a 3rd-place finish in the TCCAA Region VII Tournament as a freshman…the 6-foot-3, 185-pound southpaw compiled a 9-2 record with one save and a 3.83 ERA (18 ER/42.1 IP) in 16 appearances/9 starts…had 63 strikeouts against 31 walks…after claiming Super Sophomore honors in 2011, was named IMAC All-Conference in both his junior (2012) and senior (2013) seasons at Morristown-Hamblen East High School…combined for 120 strikeouts in 92 innings his final 2 seasons in high school.
LHP WES BENJAMIN (156th overall) - Club's 5th round pick is 6-foot-1, 188 pounds…went 4-0 with a 4.22 ERA (20 ER/42.2 IP) in 7 games/starts for the University of Kansas in his junior season, as opponents hit .279 (46-165) with one home run, 12 walks, and 31 strikeouts…the Jayhawks' no. 1 starter this season, he suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament in a start on March 28 vs. Oklahoma and had 'Tommy John' ligament replacement surgery on April 10 performed by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala…Jayhawks won each of his first 6 starts this year, including 8.2 innings to beat then-no. 10 ranked Texas on March 14 in Austin…he had also tossed 7.0 shutout innings the previous weekend at Stanford…Chicago native attended St. Charles (Ill.) East High School, where he also played football and basketball…born 7/26/93, as he does not turn 21 until next month…father played football at Shippensburg (Pa.) University and mother played lacrosse at Ohio U.
3B JOSE TREVINO (186th overall) - The 5-foot-10, 195-pounder made an in-season transition from third base to shortstop for the Golden Eagles and batted .304 (70-230) with 11 doubles, a triple, 10 home runs, 43 RBI, and 37 runs in 56 games…the right-handed batter and thrower also had 20 walks to just 25 strikeouts…he was tabbed as the shortstop on the Southland Conference All-Conference Second Team after earning a spot on the third team as a catcher in 2013…Trevino is a 2011 graduate of John Paul II High School in Corpus Christ, Texas…he tied the Texas state record with 25 home runs during his senior campaign and led the school to back-to-back state titles in 2010 and 2011…this is the second straight year for Texas to choose a player from Oral Roberts University in the draft's first six rounds after selecting RHP Chi Chi Gonzalez in the first round last year.
RHP NICK GREEN (216th overall) - The 20-year-old right-hander went 3-1 with a 2.97 ERA over 9 games/3 starts for Indian Hills Community College in Centerville, Iowa…he fanned 34 batters over 36.1 innings of work…the 6-foot-1, 175-pound Green was named to the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference All-Region Second Team…he fired a no-hitter on May 4 vs. Marshalltown Community College, securing the top seed in the region tournament for Indian Hills…the right-hander faced just one batter over the minimum, recorded 7 strikeouts, and retired the last 17 batters he faced…the Fountain, Colorado native was selected by the New York Yankees in the 35th round of the 2013 draft.
RHP ERIK SWANSON (246th overall) - A 6-foot-3, 220-pound right-handed pitcher out of Iowa Western Community College, Swanson struck out 97 batters in 79.0 innings this year to go with a 2.39 ERA…he holds a 10-1 record and has started in 3 games while appearing in 14…Iowa Western won its 3rd NJCAA Division I title in 5 years, with Swanson earning Outstanding Pitcher honors…he made a rare start on May 26 at the World Series, shutting out Midland College in a 9-0 run-rule victory in which he struck out 9 and allowed 4 hits…he has signed with University of Pittsburgh…attended Mariemount High School in Terrace Park, Ohio.
CF DOUG VOTOLATO (276th overall) - The 22-year-old switch-hitter out of the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, Arkansas batted .379 (83-219) with 10 doubles, 2 triples, one home run, 24 RBI, 50 runs scored, and 26 stolen bases in 52 games as a senior for the Bears in 2014…the 6-foot-2, 180-pound outfielder ranks nationally in batting (26th, .379), hits (T28th, 83), and stolen bases (T23rd, 26)…saw time both in the infield and outfield, claiming the starting centerfielder's job and leadoff spot halfway through the year…was a two-year captain at Flower Mound (TX) Marcus High School in the north Metroplex area…hit .329 with 17 doubes, 2 home runs and 48 RBI as a senior for the Marauders…turns 23 on June 19.
C SETH SPIVEY (306th overall) - The 21-year-old catcher out of Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas batted .341 (70-205) with 13 doubles, 3 triples, 5 home runs, 33 RBI, 44 runs scored, and 11 stolen bases in 52 games as a senior in 2014…the 5-foot-11, 180-pounder was named second-team All-Southland Conference this season…the left-handed hitting backstop played his first 2 collegiate seasons at Angelina Junior College in Lufkin, Texas, where he was a Texas/New Mexico JUCO All-Star…led Brenham (TX) High School to a Texas 4A State Championship in 2010, hitting .407 to earn All-State honors.
