Astros sign ninth-round selection Patton
Tomball lefty was 12-0 with three no-hitters as senior
The Houston Astros announced today that the club has signed left-handed pitcher Troy Patton from Tomball High School, the club's ninth-round selection in the June draft. The announcement was made by general manager Gerry Hunsicker.
Patton, who will report to the club's Rookie League affiliate in Greeneville, was 12-0 with an 0.91 ERA during his senior season at Tomball High. He struck out 142 hitters in 77.1 innings pitched, while walking 24 and allowing only 24 hits. Patton threw three no-hitters this spring, including one perfect game, and opponents hit only .122 against him in 2004.
Patton was named the Houston-area High School Player of the Year by the Houston Chronicle, while Gatorade named him the High School Player of the Year for the state of Texas. He was named to several All-American teams as a senior, including AFLAC, Louisville Slugger, and Baseball America. Patton also earned All-State honors from the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association in both 2003 and 2004.
Patton will be available to the local media this afternoon at 4:15, on the field at Minute Maid Park before Astros batting practice.
