Houston's Lance Berkman named Sharp Presents the National League Player of the Month for May

Lance Berkman of the Houston Astros has been named the Sharp Presents the National League Player of the Month for May.

The switch-hitting slugger hit .471 (49-104), with 11 doubles, a triple, nine home runs, 22 RBI and 31 runs scored in May. His .471 batting average, .553 on-base percentage, 49 hits and 85 total bases led the Majors and his 21 extra-base hits tied for the M.L. lead. The four-time All-Star posted 16 multi-hit games and five multi-RBI performances. On May 6th vs. Washington, Lance collected a career-high five hits and four runs scored, along with two doubles and an RBI. Lance was named Player of the Week for May 5-11, during which he hit .682 (15-22). Berkman compiled a 17-game hitting streak that extended from 4/30-5/18, during which he hit .545 (36-66). This marks the second time that Lance has earned N.L. monthly honors (won previously in May 2004).

Other players receiving votes were Dan Uggla (.347, 12 HR, 26 RBI) of the Florida Marlins, Ryan Braun (.322, 11 HR, 22 RBI) of the Milwaukee Brewers, Adam Dunn (.691 SLG, 10 HR, 25 RBI) of the Cincinnati Reds, Chipper Jones (.417, 4 HR, 14 RBI) of the Atlanta Braves, Ryan Ludwick (.333, 9 HR, 26 RBI) and Albert Pujols (.373, 9 HR, 17 RBI) of the St. Louis Cardinals and Alfonso Soriano (.345, 10 HR, 29 RBI) of the Chicago Cubs.
