The Houston Astros announced today that 15-year Major League veteran and former TV analyst, Eric Young, has been named as the club's minor league outfield and baserunning roving instructor. The hiring of Young completes the Astros group of minor league coordinators for the 2010 championship season. The announcement was made by Astros Assistant General Manager and Director of Player Development Ricky Bennett.

"Eric brings an enormous amount of baseball knowledge and energy to our organization" said Bennett. "The vibrant personality and leadership he showed as a player will have a valuable impact on the young players in our system."

Young played 15 seasons in the Major Leagues (1992-2006) and posted a career .283 batting average with 79 home runs and 543 RBI. He began his Major League playing career with the Dodgers in 1992 and since that season, Young ranks second among all Major League players in steals with 464, trailing only Kenny Lofton (620 SB). In his career he eclipsed the 50-steals plateau on three occasions, the 40-steal mark six times, and recorded 30-or-more steals in nine seasons. In the field, Young split his time as an outfielder and a second baseman.

Following his playing career, Young served as an in-studio analyst for ESPN's Baseball Tonight program from 2007-09. He makes his home in Houston, TX, and has a son, Eric Young Jr., who made his Major League debut with the Colorado Rockies in 2009.

Young joins a solid group of previously named roving instructors which includes Britt Burns (Pitching Coordinator), Jaime Garcia (Asst. Pitching Coordinator), Mike Barnett (Hitting Coordinator), Danny Sheaffer (Catching Coordinator), Jim Pankovits (Infield Coordinator), Mike Smith (Strength/Conditioning Coordinator) and Pete Fagan (Medical Coordinator).
