Astros Release 2012 Schedule
Franchise to celebrate 50th anniversary in 2012; Home Opener slated for Friday, April 6 vs. Colorado
HOUSTON, TX -- On April 10, 1962, when the Houston Colt 45s defeated the Chicago Cubs, 11-2 at Colt Stadium, Major League Baseball had officially begun in Houston, TX.
The 2012 season will mark the 50th anniversary of that inaugural season, and today the Houston Astros unveiled their schedule for the 2012 championship season, which includes the home and season opener at Minute Maid Park Park on Friday, April 6 in a 6:05 p.m. start vs. the Colorado Rockies. It will mark the second time the Astros have faced the Rockies in a season opener, with the first being a 10-4 Astros win at Minute Maid Park in 2003. The 2012 opener will be the start of a six-game homestand, during which the Astros will host the Rockies (April 6-8) and Atlanta Braves (April 9-11).
As a bonus, Astros fans will have the chance to get a sneak peek at the 2012 Astros prior to Opening Day when the Chicago White Sox visit Houston for two exhibition games, April 3-4.
The month of April also includes a three-game weekend series vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers, April 20-22. That brief homestand will be followed by a nine-game homestand, during which the Astros will host the New York Mets (April 30-May 2), their NL Central Division rival St. Louis Cardinals (May 4-6) and the Miami Marlins, formerly the Florida Marlins (May 7-9), all in three-game sets.
Later in May, the Astros will have an eight-game homestand in which they’ll host the Milwaukee Brewers for two games, May 16-17, before hosting the 12th installment of the Lone Star Series when the cross-state rival Texas Rangers visit Minute Maid Park for a three-game, weekend series, May 18-20. The NL Central Division-rival Chicago Cubs follow the Rangers in what will be their first visit of the season to Houston for a three-game series, May 21-23.
June will feature plenty of baseball at Minute Maid Park with the Astros hosting five different teams for 16 overall home games, starting with N.L. Central opponents Cincinnati, June 1-3, and St. Louis, June 5-7. The Astros second homestand of the month will be a season-long, 10-gamer that will feature Interleague Play as the Kansas City Royals (June 18-20) and Cleveland Indians (June 22-24) both visit Houston for three-game sets. It will be the Indians second visit ever to Minute Maid Park and their first since 2001. The homestand wraps up with a four-game series vs. the San Diego Padres, June 25-28.
July will feature the return of the Brewers for three games, July 6-8, followed by a seven-game homestand vs. division foes Cincinnati for three games, July 23-25, and Pittsburgh for four games, July 26-29, in what will be the Pirates first visit of the 2012 season. The Washington Nationals make their annual visit to Minute Maid Park for four games, August 6-9, followed by a three-game, weekend series vs. Milwaukee, August 10-12. August will also include visits from the Arizona Diamondbacks (August 17-19) and San Francisco Giants (August 28-30). The Cincinnati Reds will follow the Giants to Houston for a three-game series over Labor Day weekend (August 31-September 2) to close out the homestand.
September will include a seven-game homestand vs. the Chicago Cubs (September 10-12) and Philadelphia Phillies (September 13-16), and the final homestand of the season, a six-gamer vs. the Pirates (September 21-23) and Cardinals (September 24-26).
As always, the Astros 2012 schedule will be filled with promotional dates and popular giveaway items, and will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the franchise throughout the season.
