Astros to talk to managerial candidates

Contact with potential skippers will begin on Friday

HOUSTON -- The Astros will begin making contact with perspective managerial candidates on Friday, general manager Ed Wade said Thursday. Houston is looking for a full-time manager after dismissing Cecil Cooper last month.

Wade met with owner Drayton McLane and president of baseball operations Tal Smith at Union Station on Thursday afternoon and came up with a list of about 10 potential candidates, which includes interim manager Dave Clark.

"We're going to start making contact shortly with potential candidates, either directly or go through the permission process," Wade said. "Hopefully, we'll get to the point to schedule interviews in the middle of next week. We'll try to do as many as we can here in Houston, and there may be some situations we have to travel, particularly if a guy is involved in postseason play."

The Astros would have to ask for permission to interview any potential candidate employed by another club. That process could be trickier if the person of interest is with a team that's involved the playoffs.

"We'll be respectful of the process," Wade said.

While the initial list of potential interview candidates is around 10, Wade said that could change as the process evolves. Teams might not grant permission for interviews, and some other candidates could emerge who are not currently on the list.

"I would doubt in the first go-round [of interviews] there would be any more than that," Wade said. "If by some strange occurrence we don't hit our mark on that group, we can always expand it if a name pops up we hadn't anticipated. We can always move in a different direction.

"Realistically, we may contact some candidates and they'll not have an interest in the job. Right now, the plan is to contact around 10 and try to set schedules."
