HOUSTON -- Behind the combination of Leo Rojas' five hits and T.J. Renda's seven scoreless innings, Alabama State defeated Prairie View A&M, 9-2, at Minute Maid Park on Friday, Day 1 of Major League Baseball's sixth annual Urban Invitational.
Rojas, who scored three runs, was one of nine Hornets with a hit. The Hornets racked up 19 hits, including a home run from Waldyvan Estrada, who had three hits.
"I just went up to the plate looking for a good pitch, help my team out, get on base," said Rojas. "I knew the guys behind me would drive me in. We had a lot of guys get on base and we came out on the winning end. "
Dillon Cooper, Einar Muniz and Manny Rodriguez had two RBIs apiece for Alabama State (5-1), which built upon a 2-0 lead with a four-run fifth inning.
The right-handed Renda (2-0) scattered four hits over his seven innings with five strikeouts and a walk in his second outing of the season. In his 2013 debut, Renda struck out 15 in a nine-inning no-hitter.
"I just executed all my pitches, threw all three for strikes," said Renda (2-0), who relied mainly on his fastball to complement his curveball and changeup. "I kept the ball low and kept the hitters off balance."
The Panthers (3-3) scored twice with two outs in the top of the ninth inning. Dominiq Harris had two of Prairie View's six hits, and the first baseman scored a run and had an RBI. Michael Medina (1-1) took the loss.
