Catcher Stassi, righty Martinez called up by Astros

Corporan headed to seven-day DL; LeBlanc designated for assignment

HOUSTON -- The Astros have selected catcher Max Stassi from Double-A Corpus Christi and right-hander David Martinez from Triple-A Oklahoma City, general manager Jeff Luhnow announced Tuesday.

Carlos Corporan is headed to the seven-day concussion disabled list after leaving Monday's game against the Rangers. He was hit on the head by a foul tip in the third inning.

Left-hander Wade LeBlanc has been designated for assignment.

Stassi, acquired along with Chris Carter and Brad Peacock from the A's in exchange for Jed Lowrie in February, was hitting .277 with 17 homers and 60 RBIs for the Hooks. Stassi, 22, stands 5-foot-10 and hits right-handed.

He was a two-time Texas League Player of the Week this year and was the Hooks' Player of the Month for July, hitting .333 with 11 homers and 24 RBIs in 24 games, including homers in five consecutive games.

"Max has had a great year and is very deserving of this," Luhnow said. "He has earned this and is a very big part of our future."

Martinez, 26, had spent most of the 2013 season at Corpus Christi before being promoted to Oklahoma City earlier this month. He is a combined 14-3 with a 2.20 ERA in 28 appearances (20 starts), with two complete games. Martinez set a Corpus Christi club record for wins, with 14, and he is the current leader in the Texas League in wins and ERA (2.02). He is a product of the Astros' Venezuelan Academy after signing as a non-drafted free agent on March 3, 2005.
