One bad inning did in Santiago against the Astros Sunday, as the left-hander was touched up for all three of the runs he allowed in the second inning of a 5-4 loss. Santiago threw 112 pitches and struck out eight over 5 1/3 innings.

Davis got his first victory in five starts on Sunday, beating Tampa Bay with a six-inning effort. Flying open and getting the ball in a 35-pitch first inning, Davis corrected himself and added five shutout innings.

In the first inning Tuesday, Axelrod threw 35 pitches against the Twins, giving up four runs on five hits. He calmed down after making adjustments and went six innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on 10 hits and struck out five.

Shields still hasn't won a game since April 30 and that was nine starts ago. Even so, he possesses one of the best ERAs in the AL and the Royals have won his last four starts. On Monday, he gave up just one run in six innings vs. the Indians.
