The Astros will join the rest of Major League Baseball in celebrating Jackie Robinson Day. Sixty-seven years ago today, Jackie Robinson broke MLB's color barrier on April 15, 1947, starting at first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers vs. the Boston Braves at Ebbets Field.
Two Houston-based charities, the Houston Area Urban League and Change Happens!, will be the beneficiaries of the MLB Beacon Awards Luncheon, which is an annual Civil Rights Game event designed to recognize individuals whose lives and actions have been emblematic of the spirit of the civil rights movement. Astros mascot Orbit will be participating in the 30th Annual BP MS 150 Houston-to-Austin Bike Ride this weekend, starting on Saturday, April 12 and ending on Sunday, April 13. The annual two-day fundraising event hosted by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society supports programs and services that directly impact families and individuals affected by MS as well as critical MS research to end the disease.
